#2 – The Main Light Mechanic

I already mentioned that Light Bearer has a unique light mechanic. Most horror games use light to build atmosphere, which makes sense. But in all the ones I’ve played, the light is mostly static. You don’t really interact with it.

That’s what makes Light Bearer different. You can actually manipulate and move light.

You do this using a magical tool that looks a bit like a flashlight. Instead of using batteries, it stores light from the environment — like from a fire or a lamp — and lets you release it when you need it. If you read my last post, you’ll remember it was inspired by the Deluminator from Harry Potter.

The tool has three light levels, based on how many light orbs you’ve collected. The more orbs you have, the stronger the light gets. It shines farther, lights up more of the area, and deals more damage to enemies.

You can also switch between two light modes: wide and narrow.

– Wide beam lets you see more of your surroundings and can hit multiple enemies at once. It’s useful when you need better visibility or when you’re being swarmed. But it comes with a trade-off — the light doesn’t reach very far, and it deals less damage.

– Narrow mode focuses your light into a sharp, concentrated beam. It doesn’t light up much around you, but it can reach deeper into the dark and deal more damage to anything in its path. Switching between these modes at the right time can make the difference between surviving an encounter or being overwhelmed.

This gives you choices. Sometimes you need to power yourself up. Other times, it’s better to move the light into a lantern or lamp to light up a room. It’s up to you to figure out what’s more important at the moment.

The creatures hide in the shadows, so where and when you use your light really matters. Make sure your base is well lit — or you might not notice something creeping in.

As you progress through the game, you’ll unlock new ways to use light — not just for survival, but for casting spells, activating passive abilities, powering up your armor, and other cool stuff I’ll talk about in future posts. So stay tuned!

I haven’t added many spells or abilities yet, so if you have any ideas, feel free to share them in the comments. I’d love to hear what kind of powers you’d like to see in Light Bearer.
